LEARNER DRIVER INSURANCE:

What you need to know before you hit the road!

If you’re learning to drive or supporting someone who is, car insurance might feel like a confusing extra — but it’s absolutely essential. Whether you’re having lessons with a qualified instructor (like me!) or getting private practice with family or friends, the right cover keeps everyone safe, legal, and protected.

As a driving instructor with years of experience on the road, I’ve answered hundreds of questions about learner insurance — so I thought I’d pull it all together here as a helpful guide.

If you’re learning with a DVSA approved instructor, you’re already covered during your lessons. I hold specialist instructions for insurance that includes:

My current policy is with Aviva (via Towergate Tuition) — one of the leading providers in the instructor space — and it’s tailored to the needs of learners. So you can relax knowing you’re covered the moment you get in the car with me.

What if I want to practise in my own car?

Getting extra practice outside of lessons is a great way to build confidence — but you must have the right insurance.

Here’s the deal: you cannot legally drive a friend or parent’s car without learner driver insurance, even if they’re supervising you.

Standard car insurance doesn’t automatically cover learners, and you could end up invalidating someone else’s policy. That’s where temporary learner driver insurance comes in.

What is Learner Driver Insurance?

Learner driver insurance is a special short-term policy designed for provisional licence holders who want to practise outside of driving lessons.

It lets you get behind the wheel of a friend or family member’s car — without affecting their no-claims bonus — as long as you’re being supervised by someone over 21 who’s held a full UK licence for at least three years.

You can get cover for as little as a day, a week, or a month at a time — and in most cases it’s fully comprehensive.

Which companies do I recommend?

Over the years I’ve had pupils use a range of providers — and I only recommend the ones that are learner-friendly, affordable, and easy to deal with. These are the two that come up most:

Don’t Leave Insurance Until the Last Minute! Whether you’re booking your first lesson or getting ready for your test, insurance needs to be sorted in advance — not as an afterthought. Make sure you know who’s covering you and when.
